Explosion

Bombs are dropping… fast.

Russia’s Defense Ministry reports Russian air forces in Syria conducted 60 bombing raids over the weekend. They hit over 50 targets held by anti-American terrorist group ISIS.

The strikes have caused more than 600 terrorists to desert the area.

But the moves aren’t sitting well with other regional powers…

The Guardian reports Syrian enemies Saudi Arabia and Qatar are stepping up military support for the Syrian rebels, including ISIS.

These countries see Russia’s aid to Syria’s Assad regime as tacit support for Syria’s main regional ally, Iran. Hatred and conflict between Arabia and Persia (Iran) span millennia.

The worst part is the U.S. now finds itself on the opposite side of a military force attacking (and destroying) ISIS strongholds throughout the area.

By supporting longtime regional allies Saudi Arabia and Qatar, the U.S. is backing their proxy armies in Syria—including the infamous terrorist group.

If that’s not crazy enough, Republican presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina just suggested the U.S. shoot down Russian planes in a Syrian “no-fly” zone…

The situation now has every element you need in the “perfect” geopolitical tinderbox: widespread miscommunication, confusion between “friends” and “adversaries,” inflammatory political posturing, and two opposing nuclear powers’ militaries operating on top of each other.

Here’s what we wrote about the deteriorating scene in the September 29 Daily:

Moscow and Washington remain at odds over the Assad regime. Neither side has any good reason to battle the other… But even a military “misunderstanding” could spike oil prices, send the S&P 500 crashing, or worse. The situation is escalating fast…
