From Bob Irish, retirement expert, Palm Beach Research Group: How would you like to slash your grocery bill in half? It’s easier than you might think…
-
If you’re looking to save on groceries but aren’t sure where to start, try shopping the periphery of the store. This is where the produce, meats, and less-processed foods are stocked. The packaged, processed foods are usually displayed in the inner aisles. While tempting, these foods are usually overpriced and high in sugar and sodium.
-
Also, avoid going shopping when you are hungry, or you’ll come home with bags of groceries you didn’t intend to buy.
-
If bottled water is frequently on your shopping list, you should consider the economical (and environmental) cost. Investing in a good-quality water filter will provide you with purified water for at least three months (the average lifespan of a water filter). Consider purchasing your filters at Costco or Sam’s Club for a fraction of the cost.
-
Keep in mind that many of the major grocery stores offer superb private-label items. Sometimes the packaging isn’t as attractive as the premium brands, but the quality can be just as good or better. To see a Consumer Reports comparison between several products, go here.

You can also take advantage of cash-back coupons by downloading the Ibotta app to your smartphone. Simply snap a picture of your receipt, and the app will automatically send you a rebate.
